Biography
Julie started her training as a Midwife in 1991 and qualified in 1994. In the years before entering sexual health, she was a team midwife, worked in all areas of midwifery within the hospital and community settings and part of the wider multidisciplinary team in maternity care. Mentorship of the next generation of midwives was an extremely important element of her role and she managed the rotation of midwifery and nursing students in the team.
Finding her niche within Contraception and Sexual Health in 2002 has meant many achievements, including Non-Medical prescriber status together with fitting and removing contraceptive coils and implants. Her passion for young people was invaluable as she managed the CHOICES NHS Sexual Health outreach programmes for under 25’s in Leicester and Leicestershire. This role developed over the years and included teaching on various sexual health network events, STIFF courses and updates for community pharmacists.
Besides her NHS work, Julie is greatly enthusiastic about passing on knowledge and skills to other practitioners. A part time contract with De Montfort University enables sexual health to be on the public health agenda when teaching student midwives and nurses regarding their professional responsibility regarding the importance of good sexual health.
Julie is currently undertaking further training, so in the future she will be able to train Nurses and Doctors to fit/remove implants/coils with her passion for pain free coil fitting.
Outside of Contraception and sexual health, Julie has a keen interest in all things crafty and enjoys spending time outdoors with the family and the dog.
Since childhood Aaron wanted to be a nurse, this is evident when you meet him. As a teenager he would volunteer to spend time talking with the elderly in care homes, with the homeless at a local shelter and spent time looking after his late Grandmother, Mary.
Inspired by the confidence of others at the care home, Aaron decided to begin his Nurse training at the University of Central England in Birmingham. This is where he developed a keen and passionate interest in Sexual Health and HIV.
However, before committing to this interest, he spent a decade developing his understanding of the human body by working in Rehabilitation, Acute Medicine and Accident and Emergency departments.
In 2014, Aaron returned to Sexual Health in London. Guided by the ‘second to none’ Specialist Nurse Kate Sprecher, Aaron learnt what it meant to show a genuine interest in your patients and to pursue an ever-growing understanding of Sexual Health.
Coming back to Birmingham, Aaron accepted the position of Charge Nurse at Whittall Street Clinic. In the coming years he began focusing on helping the high-risk and marginalised LGBTQ+ community, to which he was later given overall clinical responsibility at The Birmingham LGBT Centre.
Understanding the pivotal role of prevention in the reduction of HIV, Aaron was offered a key part in the PrEP IMPACT Trial. A study focused on getting PrEP to those at the highest risk of acquiring HIV and whose results would affect clinical decisions throughout the country.
Following the trial, Aaron assisted in implementing guidelines for the safe and effective dispensing of PrEP within Sexual Health Services across Birmingham.
Meeting Aaron, you will see your problems becoming his. An individual who focuses on the patient in front of him with the determination that you won’t need another appointment.
